Fly Guy Finds: Melbourne

My only regret for my time spent in Melbourne is that I don’t have more of it! Lucky for me, the crew hotel is located just a few blocks from the Melbourne suburb of  Fitzroy: my vegan loving, hip boutique slice of heaven down under.  On my recent venture down to  Australia’s Garden City, I wondered around this hipster paradise to see what Fly Guy Finds I could cram into my bags.  Fitzroy is jam packed with small boutiques overflowing with unique trends and trinkets. So here’s what I found…

1. My first stop on Smith Street was shopsui. This shop is overflowing with Australian made Novelties that I was hunting for. I walked out the shop with these four awesome finds:

1. A cast iron retro rocket by Melbourne artist Oshi: The rocket also works as a bottle opener. Love art that can open my beer.

2.  Able and Game greeting cards:  Melbourne based stationery label Able and Game makes designs that are quirky and off beat. I could spend hours just looking at all their designs and laughing to myself in the store but then people would think I’m strange.

3.  PAKitToMe eco wise designer backpack: I’m always on the hunt for compact day bags that are pocket size but can open up to handle the big job of carrying whatever finds I buy along the way. This one is my new favorite as it’s small and lightweight and folds out to a  decent size backpack.

4.  Earthbound Creations recycled newspaper pencils: No wood was harmed in the making of these pencils that are made of 100% recycled newspapers.

Just next to shopsui is is Mulbury. The shop specializes in selling homewares that are reclaimed or recycled. The allure to the shop was their reclaimed Australian timber frames. I picked up one that was perfect for framing Instagram shots I’d printed off. Also among my finds in the store were hand painted door stoppers from Sri Lanka. Thought that it would make the perfect housewarming gift for my bestie.

Just another short stroll from Mulbury is where I met a like travel minded Nikki Hall and her boutique Hudson. Nikki is a former travel writer turned shop owner and her shop reflects her worldly retail knowledge. How I wanted to walk a mile in her shoes.. No really I wanted her shoes! Lucky for me she stocked the Parisian designed Armistice shoes that I was coveting.

Nikki was full of good advice on where to search for my finds. She set me down the road to find Third Drawer Down  There I found the  Anywhere Travel Guide. This box of cards that turns any destination into your blank canvas for exploration.  I can’t wait to use these on an upcoming layover.

My Fly Guy finds wouldn’t be complete without a few additions to my health, body and soul regime. Melbourne is a holistic health mecca. Here are three finds to take care of my inner and outer self.  First is Healthy Essentials Liquid Immune, a liquid herbal blend of Echinacea, Olive Leaf, Elderberry, Panax Ginseng and key nutrients Vitamin C and Zinc.  Formulated to boost your immune system and fight off fatigue. For relaxation when I’m traveling I always keep a travel candle in my bag and this is perfect for Fly Guy. With soy wax, a cotton wick and screw top, I can have a manly smelling, clean burning candle on the go. Paw Paw ointment is a basic necessity for nearly every Australian I know. However, the typical red tube most Aussies bust out to attack dry skin, is petroleum based and is basically a fruity overpriced Vaseline.  I was in search of natural Paw Paw ointment and found Brauer’s Paw Paw Ointment without petrochemicals. In audition to fermented papaya, or paw paw, this ointment has added nourishment from Shea Butter,  Honey, Vitamin E and Grapeseed Oil.

Last but not least. My ultimate must have and find from Australia is an annual event. Each year on Boxing Day the Aussie radio station Triple J broadcasts its hottest 100 countdown and the top 40 songs earn a spot on the annual compilation album. It’s a mix so good I swap onto an Australia bound flight to get my copy. Hands down. it’s always my favorite mixed album year after year. This year I picked mine up in Melbourne. A bit disappointed that the hottest track was “Thrift Shop”, However the rest of the mix makes up for that one.

  1. I love triple J hot 100! I’m still listening to last years mix it was so good! Jealous of your Melbourne trip, if you’re ever there for a longer period of time you should make it out to Yarra Valley and the Dandenongs, thats where I lived ( in the boonies! haha)

    • Yeah I have a plan of attack for my next visit… Yeah last years mix was WAY better. I think this years mix was not as good as the past 4 years. However still better than most mixes out there! Thanks for the tips

  2. Thank you Fly Guy once again for an inspirational way to spend your layover! Love Melbourne’s vintage shops there so fab! Keep your posts coming I love them!
